About 70% of people currently in jails (in the US) are there for pot or related charges.

People arrested for pot, on average, spend five times the amount of time in jail as those arrested for manslaughter.

In addition .. Federal and state governments have never fully funded the war on drugs. Local folks are expected to pay for the jails, courts and extra police.

Washtenaw Co. (Ann Arbor) voters just turned down another request for a new jail. For some reason we just can't seem to build them big enough. Oh yes ... the sheriff's department seems to be going belly up also.

You're right .. we can't afford the police state.

No version of utopia can work forever.

Abraham Lincoln:
"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."

in a sense, marijuana is taxed. Since it is criminalized, any property associated with the bust is seized, and auctioned. The arresting district gets to keep the proceeds, I believe. So, the people who live in that region pay less in taxes theoreticially.

The idea isn't for law enforcement to stop the crims, only get their fair share ; )
