I am still recovering from both -the illness and the television. After hours of Foley coverage, I found Home Shopping and Paid Programming a relief, and the black and white Japanese godzilla film was riveting theatre. Anyway, I am concluding that trying to piece together something like this is an exercise in futility. I listened to "analysts" on both sides spouting spin and taking their best shots, and you know, it's all meaningless. By taking the smacks, I really didn't mean they admit the commission of sins, rather that they do the right things now, as best they can, with dignity and with regret that they hadn't been aware of the severity of Foley's problem. The defensiveness to me is exemplified in pulling out 25 year old cases, trying to make themselves look better by comparing what happened then to now, saying in effect, "hey, your guy was slimier than ours". Or taking the Brooks social commentary on Foley v. Vagina Monologues as representative of moral codes and then trying to twist it into a liberal celebration of child seduction. (VM is a play- and not a very good one at that- that was more a response to women's frustrations and emerging sexual freedom and awakening. The enthusiastic reaction by women had nothing to do with approving child seduction or moral codes, and I would bet not many would approve of that one small monologue as an actual scenario. Art is not necessarily advocacy, and taking one small piece out of the context is not a very sound tactic.) All of this does nothing but prolong this debate- which is harmful to the Republicans, imo. I agree with you about the timing, by the way. I think politics played a role in how Foley was initially handled, and in how it has become public. But why would we think it wouldn't? This is the game now- ignoble, dirty, and merciless- on both sides.
