I ask that people attempt to look at this as though they weren't committed to winning every battle for their party. This one is a trap that no one wins. The average voter wants no part of it.

Repubs: 'We will prove who the party of low morals is'.
Dems: 'We gotcha'.
Repubs: No ya don't we're not done fighting about it yet.
Dems: 'he he he'

A few years ago I remember arguing with the Dems that if they didn't get back to work, the clinton scandal would destroy every bit of progress they had made advancing liberal issues, they preferred to try to win something against the repubs by slandering republican reps and blaming them for the paralysis of congress. They refused (and still do) to recognize bill clinton screwed up and could no longer effectively lead. Had he simply stepped aside and allowed Gore to pick up the reigns, I believe things would have gone way differently.
