But back to your question about China vs Japanese quality: for items imported to the US, Japanese quality is generally much superior to Chinese quality. I suspect that quality difference is reflected in the higher price of Japanese exported goods.

Quality is a management decision. It says nothing about anything.

Most manufacturers work back wards. They find the price point and manufacture accordingly.

People generally would pay more for items labeled manufactured in Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, or Japan. They can afford to design to higher specs and get away with much higher profit margins.

But for most day to day products, people may not care all that much for quality. They would rather pay lower prices.

Quality is just as high as the manufacturer is willing to pay.

It has nothing to do with anything. It is more of a marketing thing than anything else.
