You can IM through Yahoo. I've done it once and didn't ever think of saving them. Cut and paste to an email would seem the only option. If the kids were trying to pull a prank they'd think of that or find some other way to save them. They're soooooooo resourceful.

THere should be a complete history of all your IMs. I just checked mine. They go back to when I opened the account in Dec 05. I use Trillian, which is compatible with a bunch of networks. It doesn't involve copying or saving or anything extra, at least for me, so it wouldn't be that unusual for the pages to still have a record of the exchanges.
