CHRT Chartered Semi president: 4Q semiconductor market outlook still uncertain - DigiTimes (7.35 )

DigiTimes reports Chia Song Hwee, president and CEO of Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, says that clearer visibility for the fourth-quarter semiconductor mkt has yet to arrive, although IC inventory levels are decreasing. The key to the fourth-quarter semiconductor mkt is demand during the Christmas shopping season, according to Chia. He revealed that Chartered has yet to finalize its planned capital expenditure for 2007. But since Chartered is now entering 45nm production, in addition to gearing up production at the 65nm node next year, its 2007 capex may not be less than that for 2006, Chia added. Chartered plans to set up a production base - mostly likely an 8-inch fab - in China, but the co has yet to decide when and where that plant will be constructed, Chia said. Chartered also works, currently, with the China-based CSMC Technologies - in which Chartered holds a stake - for 6-inch outsourced production, but the cooperation between the two cos has yet to be extended to 8-inch production, Chia said.
