The attributes of appropriative water rights in Nevada are: 1) beneficial use is the measure and the limit of the right to the use of the water; 2) rights are stated in terms of definite quantity, manner of use, and period of use; and 3) a water right can be lost by abandonment or forfeiture. Abandonment is determined by the intent of the water user to forsake the use of the water. A water right is lost by forfeiture if the right is not used for 5 years.
