Unnamed experts in the US intelligence services told the Washington Times newspaper that the seismic tremor registered in the north of the communist state on Monday could have been caused by conventional explosives rather than a nuclear bomb. Officials said the explosion appeared to be weaker than would be expected from a nuclear explosion. A clearer picture would emerge as more data comes in, they said. The South Korean government said Tuesday it believes North Korea's claims that it detonated a nuclear device are true. "The government believes North Korea actually conducted a nuclear test," Unification Minister Lee Jong Seok told a National Assembly committee in Seoul. © 2006 dpa German Press Agency
