I had the strangest dream last night. In it I slowly became the Other.. I was getting ready for my high school graduation. For some reason, we were sitting on my mother's porch. Several mailmen came up and started singing barbershop. (probably because I had talked to Michael yesterday). Then next door, on their porch, they started singing opera. Then everyone started singing, and someone said, You had better get dressed. Your date will be here soon. Then another woman said, oh, dear, I forgot to tell you. The date we got you couldn't make it, so we got someone else. We hope you don't mind Asians. Not at all, I said. My dress has an Oriental neckline. Oh no,said someone else. Didn't you know? The theme is Restoration costumes! No one TOLD me! I cried, as sure enough, all these people started parading by in ornate Restoration dresses and coats and tights. Now I can't graduate. I said, furious. Well, my mother said helpfully. We will put you at the end of the line, and have them tell the audience you're from Texas.
