My set up has at the top of each person I write to (when I open their name to send a message) a bar of options which includes File, and under file is View Activity History. It seems to go back to the beginning of the history, not just that particular exchange. I don't know about other setups, but my system designing son knows all, and I can ask him. I do know he is always saying how nothing ever really disappears (unless you DON'T want it to). All kids today are so computer savvy, it is amazing. I don't think it's at all odd that these IMs are readily accessed after a several years. The timing is certainly suspicious, but not that they were available.
