I don't think I accept that all the ACLU's actions in this area are actions to protect us all.

They may be actions to protect the minority, but protections of the minority are not necessarily actions to protect all.

A distinction can be drawn between "actions to make sure that any group that happens to be the minority at a particular time does not get unfairly trampled by the majority", and "actions to support the view of the current minority". The former is probably a useful function even from the prospective of the current majority (unless they are totally self interested and also think they will always be the majority). It can be taken to far, but that doesn't mean its never good, or even that it usually isn't good. The later is just advocacy of a particular position.

How much the various positions and actions the ACLU takes might be considered one or the other could be debated I would only assert that the ACLU doesn't always act to keep things fair for the various groups and ideas, it also advances its own ideas. Not that there is anything wrong with doing so, but they are a combatant with their own agenda within the system not just a defender of the system.
