"Matthews says Hastert 'throwing staff to the hounds'

Anyone involved in covering up inappropriate messages sent by former Rep. Mark Foley to Congressional pages should be fired, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL) said at a press conference today.

Referencing members of his own staff, Hastert told reporters, "With 20/20 hindsight, we could probably do everything a little bit better. But if there is a problem, if there was a cover-up, then we should find that out through the investigation process. They'll be under oath and we'll find out. If they did cover something up, then they should not continue to have their job."

In the following video, MSNBC's Chris Matthews provides analysis of Hastert's press conference. Matthews disassembles the Speaker's comments, stating that, "On three different levels: throwing the staff to the hounds, then trying to retreat to some soft admission of guilt that mistakes were made -- the old passive voice was almost used there -- and third, trying to change the subject to taxes. You saw a classic damage control operation from the Speaker there."
