Personally, I haven't much use for polls since they can be so easily manipulated. I'll admit that they serve a function for politicians, at least by providing some idea of trends in public opinion on given issues.

Depending on who commissions the poll, another function is to drive public opinion. This can be accomplished by beating the public over the head with the outcome with the hope of influencing people to the prevailing opinion identified in the poll. This is just another version of the "if you say it often enough, it becomes true to people" syndrome.

As for stats, like the 1/4 for "evangelical Christians", I'd need a little more concrete definition of terms.
