It's effectively a non-precedent considering that she didn't hire counsel, didn't offer a defense, and didn't even bother show up for the trial. It does illustrate the danger of ignoring a lawsuit when one is a named defendant.

How things have changed here in 2014. Recall this story back in 2006 about a plaintiff who got a jury award for defamation for $11.3M against someone who wasn't in the courtroom, had no lawyer, and in fact was made homeless by Katrina and never received any court paperwork [The judgement was finally set aside in 2007]. Even better, recall how far we've come since Business Wire v Mitchell-- the first case ever to use a SLAPP defense for Internet related defamation. :)
