why is it when the market doesn't do what some want it to do, they blame it on a "rigged game" or a conspiracy?

this is all very simple. There were way too many shorts who thought that the housing slowdown would crater the economy.

Housing did slow down but the consumer is still spending like never before. That created a big short squeeze. It's as simple as that. If the consumer really does fall apart, the market will decline.
