Dear Tench:

No the airline ticket prices aren't fixed. They vary over time, rising when under heavy demand and falling if there is little demand. They do need to fill their seats. Near dead heading an aircraft is expensive. Also there is a penalty for buying close to departure date and time. The last is diametrically opposed to the CPU market.

Lastly, you said it, different vendors set different prices. Some think they can gouge $100 for their services. Would you buy from a vendor who marks up the cost an additional 33%? No? Then join with the rest of us and boycott that vendor until their price drops below their competitors.
