I really can't answer that, MM. I just flat don't know. If the South had seceded successfully, it's almost a certainty they wouldn't have remained separate for very long, whether they rejoined the Union or not.

But the point is, IMO, that Lincoln trashed the Constitution, and garnered powers that didn't belong to the Presidency. Had he not done so, it's doubtful if America would have invaded Mexico, so states from CA to TX might not be part of the US today. Or, maybe they would, I don't know. If the individual States had more autonomy, would America have joined in the frey in WWs I & II? I don't know.

I do know that I don't like politicians messing with MY Constitution.
