I seriously doubt that religious types want their faiths challenged in that fashion...

Of course they don't. All authoritarians hate challenge. And no one wants to have his feelings hurt. So those with enough power, be it Dad or the boss or the prima dona or whoever, put criticism and even questions off limits.

Dismissed as another quaint custom..

If it is, indeed, "another quaint custom," you'd think folks who are into it would want to know so they can quit wasting their time and energy on it. And if it's not just "another quaint custom," you'd think that it's followers would be prepared to show questioners why not. Putting certain ideas off limits is a sign of the weakness of the ideas.

As far as presenting religion in the public classroom in the context of philosophy or some other appropriate topic, that doesn't diminish let alone ridicule it. It simply recognizes school as a place for education and church as a place for worship.
