The First Amendment has protected freedom of religion since 1791, the date of the adoption of the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to our Constitution.

But surely you don't want laws that mandate or require "respect" of anything. That's diametrically opposite of freedom of thought.

You are free to think and believe what you believe, and I am free to disrespect you and your beliefs.

Respect is a subset of good manners, not good government. Dissing someone else's beliefs may be rude but it's not a violation of their fundamental rights to freedom of religion, freedom of speech, or freedom of thought.
