"Not wanting their faith challenged might mean that they are insecure, or that they are intolerant, or easily annoyed, or any number of other things."

Challenging Points of view, interpretation, doctrine, dogma, ritual, tradition, or loyalties is different than challenging faith. Most religious people are compulsive about arguing those issues. Faith, unfortunately, is often confused with allegiance to culture or practice. Those types of challenges are likely to produce fire works for obvious, not necessarily good, reasons.

I doubt faith all by itself is very challengable, absent the presence of extreme life changing events.

Putting certain ideas off limits is a sign of the weakness of the ideas.

"Or a sign of weakness or intolerance on the part of those holding the ideas."

Or insecurity.

Why do you jump right away to authoritarian?

I picked two items, authoritarian and susceptible to hurt feelings. They were the first two to come to mind. I didn't intend them as a complete set. My phrasing didn't suggest a complete set, I don't think.

But since you posed the question... <g>

It seems to me that declaring questioning off limits, which is what the blasphemy tactic does, seems to me instinctive to an authoritarian. Blasphemy was the topic being discussed, at least by me, and the context for my comments. Declaring blasphemy is hardly the tactic of the easily annoyed.
