I will leave the statistical debates to those who understand the nitty gritty; I have seen authoritative-sounding texts on both sides now.

As for the Sunnis and Iran's exported fighters, they are not "hooking up" since they occupy opposite sides of a huge religious divide.

As for comparing today's deaths with Saddam, when one group kills people in another group for reasons of power and abuse, it adds up the same in the morgues. Saddam killed and tortured to preserve his power, Sunni insurgents do it to try to get that power back and the Shiites do it to cement their new majority domination of Iraq outside Kurdistan.

It is an ugly Pandora's box all around. We broke it and we can't fix it.
