You are right. I view the intent of taxes as nothing more than pooling the resources of a community to the benefit of self and other.

"I do think that means can indeed be justified by the ends, but only if the good of the end is much better than the bad of the means, and also if the means are both necessary and sufficient to achieve the ends."

That argument has been used by the very powerful to exploit and harm those with less power throughout human history, sometimes based on initial good intent.

I don't think it can be reigned to the benefit of humanity over the long run.
