There is certainly a strong connection between declaring an idea to be blasphemy and declaring it out of bounds for discussion. Its not a total and perfect connection, but I understand where you coming from, the connection is rather significant. However absent a theocracy I'm not sure I would consider the declaration to be authoritarian.

Also the idea that any idea should be open to challenge does resonate with me. I might find certain challenges to be bogus and tiresome and not worth paying attention to, but that's different from saying "You shall not make such a challenge". I might at some point declare a subject off limits in a thread I moderate (don't think I ever have, but my threads are dead anyway), but there is a difference between saying "I want an area free of such noxious discussion", and saying "you should not be able to say such noxious things".

"Anyone who says, in effect, "my way or the highway" regarding an idea is taking an authoritarian tack--taking challenge off the table in favor of his authoritarian decree of truth."

What about a cabbie who says "hit the road toots, I don't want booze carrying floozy infidels in my cab." Is this not a tad too harsh and intolerant or am I putting a red herring in front of you?
