Indeed the invasion was an intractable failure. I don't think that bringing back Saddam is the right idea, unless it is agreed upon by the Iraqis.

The US has very little stock with the Iraqis. Aside from the pro American Kurds in the north, there is no one left in Iraq that trusts us. And rightfully so. Bush I told the Shia that we stand behind you after the first Gulf war, then he let Saddam take command of the air with helicopters and he massacred them.

This time we decapitated the strongman Saddam and his army, and it reignited age old tensions between the Sunni and the Shia. It's a civil war between the Shia and the Sunni.

I agree that it would be nice if the Shia and Sunni could live in harmony with each other. It's not going to happen over night. Therefore the partitioning idea with an oil revenue sharing scheme might work.

Regardless all we can do is let Iraqis solve their problems, and stop making more problems for them.

Redeploy to Kuwait or other nearby locations and let the Iraqis decide what they want. We can encourage democratic reforms and human rights. These are the tickets to becoming part of the family of democratic nations. It's in their interests to solve their problems and to join the family of nations. Membership requires democratic principles and human rights. They'll figure it out and then do what they need to do.
