one of the problems is the unwillingness of the US government to simply put these people on trial, find out if they are guilty or not, and then sentence them. The young al Kahdr kid is a good example. He tossed a grenade at people who were medics, at least that is his charge. That is directly against the Geneva Convention. Try him and shoot him, according to the convention killing a medic is a war crime. He wore no uniform and is a Canadian, not an Afghani, also a war crime.

The problem is that Muslims don't recognise the Geneva Convention. They recognize Sharia law. The two are not compatible, or even similar. So Muslims think nothing of hacking the heads off Americans or using torture, and Americans are left trying to fight a war, where they have no clue of the rules, and no chance of understanding their enemy. At some point Americans need to try to appear strong and ruthless. If the Muslims thought that the Americans had the Moral Strength to be as ruthless as the Muslims, we would already be having peace talks. You cannot win a war against an enemy who thinks you won't fight. Americans have worked hard to assure the world they are afraid to fight.

I prefer reliable sources of which wikipedia is not one. Geoff apparently has more faith in it than I do.

Altman either does not want to accept the possibility of American, Danish, or British staff using torture that exceeds the SERE "standards" or he has not thought the subject through.

If you had read his posts, you would not make that statement. He is fully aware that the US has a much more humane standard for treatment of illegal combatants than others seem to have for US citizens whether they are military, journalists or others.

Thus the reference to hacking heads off is pertinent if mildly sarcastic.
