I was just thinking in practical terms.

The federal case against Duncan still has the death penalty attached, so he will probably be executed anyway. So why not save the state a bundle by accepting the plea bargain? The sheriff thought he would get killed in prison anyway.

That man looks so pathetic, you almost feel sorry for him but for his crime. Apparently he is not stupid. His computer files are encrypted so well that part of his plea bargain was to release the encryption key.

Duncan should die. We can't have creatures like that roaming our streets, and they don't deserve to be fed in prison.
