I daresay there are many people who feel as you did, JDN. My brother, unlike me, has returned to the church, and enjoys the folk mass, and the young people's participation.

When I was visiting him last month, I asked him if a priest ever made overtures to him as an alterboy. He was horrified. He said no, they never even spoke to him.

We had priests who were very close family friends, wonderful, learned, open-minded men, who often came to dinner. I still remember Father Mac, whose blessing was "Bless this food and us who eats it". A handsome Irishman, he played a mean piano, loved bourbon, and read everything. My father, a non-believer, bourbon drinker, avid reader, and singer, and he were wonderful friends. I think it was his benign influence that caused my father to convert on his deathbed after a lifetime of cynicism.

It probably isn't just the Mass that I mourn so much as my memories and what I think we have lost in so many ways with the traditions and rituals, which I believe are tremendously important to a society. Drastic wholesale change is risky business.
