The latter, of course.

One of the fallacies that show up in the discussion of design vs happenstance is the folks get hung up on the notion of a planned end result. Had we evolved differently, then we would have not pianos but musical instruments suited to the beings that we turned out to be. Or maybe no musical instruments at all. It's like in probabilities where the probability that you will get some result is higher than the probability that you will get a specific result.

I don't know - natural ability to play the piano would stem from a talent for music in general, I'd think. The reason that people have musical talent or even make music at all is unknown and apparently unexplainable.
