I think it was Heinz who put it well a few months ago when he said we are "socializing risk but privatizing profits." Ironically, the cost of socializing risk is to remove the things which traditionally look like a socialist state, like national health care and other social services. Maybe it would be more correct to say were are a becoming a corporate socialist state. GS being able to push a button and shake down hedge funds in the gasoline allocation is simply a bonus. DO you think there was laughter in the room when they decided they'd do that? Do they have a *name* for that type of shakedown (ala Enron)?
