I am ordering that book- Your Brain on Music-- and will tell you as soon as I find out!

David Levitin, the author, was originally a musician and producer before he went back to school for his PhD in the neurosciences. He has an impressive resume- both in the music field and the academic.

It was his fascination with the effect of music on people that sent him into that field of study. He has a lot of theories on what appeals to people- predictable schema with elements of surprise, rhythms, expression.

A lot of our preferences are based on what we are exposed to even as far back as in utero, where the fetus actually develops an attraction based on what his mom listens to. It seems our music appreciation is based on both hardwiring and culture.

And of course, there is the Mozart Effect, the studies that show listening to Mozart actually raises IQ.
MIlk, eggs, and higher IQs-- who can argue with those results.

Did you know painting a chicken house red causes them to lay more? I read that forty years ago and have never forgotten it.
