Some reasonable arguments for music actually causing a survival benefit have been asserted.

Really? How reasonable are they? How non-silly are the arguments? Did music evolve so human males can attract females or is it so human females could attract men? Darwin asserted or guessed something like that. Though it seems pretty silly as humans can attract mates in a lot better ways than music.

Even if they are bogus, there could be some survival benefit that we haven't thought of yet.

Sure. Anything we haven't thought of yet might exist. Or might not.

Even if there isn't traits can evolve with no survival benefit.

Via what evolutionary mechanism? Not natural selection.

Add that up and I can't see how the appreciation of music is evidence for intelligent design.

"evidence for" - okaaay. "evidence for" would have to be pretty strong. I suppose if our brains were hard-wired to cause us to break out in hymnal music every 7 days, that might be "evidence for".

Though I see no evidence against ID in the - highly speculative natural causes that we don't know about yet but surely will someday - either. And the surely will someday part strikes me as faith pure and simple.

I’d like to offer a hypothesis on music’s benefits: group cohesion. I think that different elements of tribal customs have value in developing and strengthening the group identity. Face paint for men identifies members of the warrior class of the tribe. Initiation rites induct the adolescents into manhood, notifying the rest of the tribe that a member has gained new status. These ceremonies are usually accompanied by music of some kind, typically simple drumming for our most primitive ancestors.

Being able to move rhythmically with others enforces an idea “I’m with you. I move with you. I move with the same purpose as you.”
