It is hard to have a polite debate because people on both sides couple their discussion on the issues with attacks on the Others. The left talks about using government to help people because the right are such heartless, greedy, selfish warmongering bastards who run the universe through their evil corporate conspiracy. The right talks about "values" because the lefties are such heartless, crazed, irresponsible nutcases that they want to tear down western civilization, or at least had it over to evil foreigners. So it becomes impossible to talk about values or the role of government or an effective foreign policy through all the personal animosity and noise. I have yet to find a thread on SI with a broad set of views that didn't disintegrate into something like the above within 100 posts. Every time I go skim one of the other popular political threads I see the same garbage and lose interest.
