German scientists adjusted their research interests to the new policies. And those few who did not adjust disappeared. "No pressure"... but, those who didn't fall in line were gone. Sounds like there may have been a lil' bit of pressure, after all... :) Interesting - Crichton does a good job showing how easily scientists can be manipulated and pressured, and how willingly they tend to go with the flow, and fall into herd mentality -- and yet, "our only hope" for the future is.... science. Science is good at what it is good at... but it has its limitations, and it wouldn't do well as a secular religion.
