The Sherman tank was also referred to as a Ronson, the famous cigarette lighter of the WWII era. The tank just could not take a hit and burned very easily.

Cyber, Very interesting. The Sherman may have had a better chance if they had diesel engines instead of the gasoline type. I think that the Panzers were diesels and were less often to go up in flames. There seems to always have been a problem with our military higher ups choosing weaponry that had some kind of flaws, and without the back woods engineering of our troops, many more would have died. Of course, the military men that were in charge of deciding on what to buy, did get a fatter wallet.

I can remember one instant where every F-14 (I think) was equipped with a $600 ash tray in the cockpit. Wasn't that smart?
