well, as you probably know manga are popular in Japan so it is nowhere near as ridiculous-sounding as a comic book is to most Westerners (although i think the genre is slowly but surely gaining a bit of stature in the West. i even have a pretty cool manga about North Korea written in English by a French Canadian--Pyongyang: A Journey In North Korea. the author writes about his experiences living in Pyongyang while working as an illustrator or something.
amazon.com ).

the Kim Jong-il manga is a serious work imo--serious enough to be forbidden in the South. South Korea forbids the publication of a factual account of the life of the leader of enemy state North Korea, with which it is still technically at war. LOL!

btw, a lot of the peerlessly great man's popularity, especially among younger Koreans, stems from his willingness to "resolutely smash" the "crooked tentacles" of "American imperialists", who are nothing but "wicked and stupid" "beasts in human skin". Korean people are "deeply moved" by the peerlessly great man's "matchless grit" fueled by a "bitterer hatred" for the "extra-large crimes" committted by the "Fucking USA".

NB. all the above items in quotes are from actual North Korean press statements.

** this video (song written by South Korean, video made by North Korea and broadcast on North Korean television) is hilarious:
