What were the excuses for Saddam, Ghaddafi, and Idi Amin etc etc...

If he is an alcoholic it seems to me not necessarily relevant.

Your assertion could boil down to "alcoholics, even those who have not had any alcohol in many years are rigid, dishonest, self-centered, and belligerent".

I don't think I agree with that assertion, certainly it is a very unsupported assertion.

Alcoholics who are currently using, or cycling back and forth between periods of use and relatively brief periods of abstinence, might exhibit such traits to a greater degree than the average person but even among active alcoholics none of those traits are universal.
