The cruise ship companies have big meathooks in the Juneau tourist trade. They own many of those little shops. My wife's friend owns a shop right next to the Red Dog, and she's very nice. We also did a lot of business at Fire and Ice, which is a jewelry store right across the street from the cruise ship dock.

We found that shops that stayed open all year were often owned by locals. Local people like to boycott the tourist trap stores. Maybe that's why they are so surly.
