I dare say that many of the left did serve, most honorably as did those on the right and those in the middle. My admiration of those who serve is greater because I did not. It wasn't through failure, but through my following the rules, having two physicals on consecutive days (one for the Marines, one for the draft), and failing the hearing test. This physical limitation was my own fault for having shot my .44 pistol without hearing protection throughout highschool and college. I didn't argue with my 1Y designation. An acquaintance petitioned to have his vision defect waived, and ended up getting shot up pretty bad in Vietnam. He's the better man.
