If not Christians, then who was responsible?

You haven't specified precisely what persecution you are referring to, but if you are referring to the Spanish Inquisition, it would be more proper for you to say the Roman Catholics -- which of course are NOT catholic even though they claim to be, so of course I would prefer Papists. But most people who don't know any better simply say Catholics, which is a misnomer. It is much better to specify "Roman" Catholics, because only the Orthodox are true members of Christ's Catholic Church from which the Romans have been alienated for nearly a thousand years now. Catholic is usually interpreted "universal", but it was often used by the Fathers to mean "absolutely lacking nothing" as well. Christ's Church is holy, blameless, and without spot, and truly does lack nothing, so only Christ's Church is truly Catholic.

It certainly wasn't Muslims and atheists are few and far between. So, if only by default, it was Christians or those who call themselves Christians -- but then, of course, you have your own special definition of "Christian"!

Well when you do not know Jesus Christ or his Holy Church I can understand how you have nothing to go on save for someone's word.

But if you were ever to come to the knowledge of Christ and Holy Church you would quickly learn that there are many who call themselves Christians who are not Christians and that there are many people calling themselves Jews and children of Abraham but that doesn't make it so, and that there are many people calling themselves Catholic and that doesn't make it so.

This is clearly laid out in the Sacred Scriptures both Old Testament and New.

The definition of what it means to be a Christian is not my own or "special" in the sense of my own personal opinion. I strive to deliver to you the judgment of the Church. Of course being human and greatly sinful, I can err in my judgments, but that would not reflect on the Church itself. That would only be a reflection of my ignorance of Church teaching.

The more one gets to know the teachings of Christ and His Church, the easier it becomes to determine what it means to be a Christian.

Before my conversion to Christ I was unable to make any clearer determination than you. Early on in the process of my conversion to Christ, I was unable to determine if Protestants and Catholics were Christians myself. For all I knew they were.

It was only after Christ gave me the assurance that I had found His true Church that I began to see that Roman Catholics and Protestants were not a part of it.

And you take "Christianity" as it suits you.

Not true. Holy Church defines Christianity, not me. Christ established his Church and gave the Apostles authority over it. This authority has been passed down through the centuries by the successors to the apostles. The Holy Spirit guides the Church into all truth. I am not teaching anything novel or new. The teachings of the Protestants and the Papists have been condemned by the Church centuries before I was even born.
