New York's Consolidated Edison Awards Contract to DESC for Mobile Power Interface

distributed-energy.com

WAITSFIELD, Vt. -- Northern Power, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp. (Nasdaq: DESC), has been awarded a $2.1 million contract from Consolidated Edison Company of New York (NYSE: ED) to supply the utility with an advance version of its new Mobile Power Interface (MPI) power converter solution.

A major regulated utility provider of electric service in New York City and Westchester County, Con Edison is entering into the contract as part of its ongoing effort to develop and deploy generation in support of the distribution network. Northern Power's MPI1800 offers utilities a safe and reliable solution for connecting megawatt (MW) scale generators to a distribution grid. The mobile system will provide power to the network during emergencies.

The MPI1800 system includes a natural gas-fired, 1.5 MW generator packaged in a mobile trailer that can be readily deployed during contingencies or deployed to multiple locations over the course of a year. It also includes a diesel fuel tank sized to allow the system to run at rated capacity for 10 hours before re-fueling. Built-in environmental controls and communication systems, including the company's SmartView(R) SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) software program, provide data collection and system monitoring capabilities.

The MPI1800 ordered by Con Edison contains two PowerDistributor(TM) PD900 power converters, a utility circuit breaker, and a medium voltage transformer. The PD900s provide high speed sensing, advanced controls, and IGBT switching capable of disconnecting the generation source from the grid in less than a 1/4 cycle, a performance level critical in meeting the utility's interconnection requirements, as well as preventing added fault current contribution on Con Edison's secondary network distribution system. In addition, the MPI1800 system is capable of providing supplemental reactive power to support voltage sags.

Con Edison will evaluate the technical performance of the MPI1800 and make recommendations for the final commercial offering. Con Edison will ensure that the final product supports their specific needs, at the same time lending valuable, practical utility perspective to Northern Power's design team.

"We fully support the development of distributed generation technologies and are undertaking this project to examine new technologies for their ability to meet New York's future energy needs," stated Dan Sammon, a technical specialist at Con Edison.

Chris McKay, product manager at Northern Power, added: "We are pleased to be working with Con Edison as we continue refining the MPI1800, an ideal solution for utilities who need short term supplemental or emergency power generation. Designed to support network distribution systems and other portions of the grid, the MPI1800 can help utilities avoid expensive substation expansion, provide greater power quality, and even be implemented during planned maintenance, or in advance of grid expansion to serve new customers before the establishment of permanent service."

DESC has been falling for a long time. That is one ugly chart, but I think oil is peaking and alt.energy is going to be big. Is this company in trouble or is this a good buying opportunity under $1?

Go Rutgers Football! I have season tickets for the upcoming season!
