To me it is not acceptable to use proprietary software in voting machines. To do so means we are trusting the writers of the proprietary software that their software is honest. One can program software to do anything one wants. If one wants to program software to count all votes accurately except between the hours of 11 and 3 on election day to credit all votes cast to the republican, such software code can be written. And currently there is no guarantee that such code is not being written, and used.

From the beginning of voting as a system to decide things there has been a tendency among certain dishonest people to rig the vote. There is a good book called Votescam about some of the tactics used in Florida and other places. It is quite amazing to what extent some people will go to cheat the process. Cheating is human nature. Why should we blindly accept that voting machines are honest?
