I think we're all in agreement; There's no reason for AMD to spend $B on ATI if they're just going to neglect her... They have a plan, and it includes all of ATI's strengths. We already know what the plan is, in broad strokes:

A) Best-of-breed platform
B) Stream computing

Of the two, A is important, but B is essential to the continued competitiveness of AMD.

Besides, ATI's top talent would flee in a mass exodus if AMD tried to squash the coolest, most fiercly contested product in their lineup.
