The Mormons have a good system for that. They believe in having a year's supply of food on hand at all times, so they are good at rotating their stock.

I knew a Mormon family on the Clearwater River that subsisted themselves on what they grew and hunted. I visited their place by crossing the river on a cable car.

I actually had to throw some stuff away a few weeks age that was terribly out of date.
