That was an astute observation by your friend. I had reached roughly the same conclusion from experience. It seems like most of the time I flew TWA during the nineties the outbound flight went well but the return flight got cancelled. It seems like they concentrated on getting people to their destination, but returning was a luxury.

About 20 years ago we booked a flight to Florida on Eastern Airlines. We got to Denver, and Eastern went belly up. Our travel agent had to do some scrambling.

I had a buddy in Juneau who said the reason airlines are bankrupt so often is that government encouraged overcapacity by giving them subsidies.

With hardware that expensive, you would think a little more conservative approach would be in order.
