She said her father drinks all the time (maintenance drinker) and that he's always honest and sweet.

You said before that alcoholics are belligerent and lie, drinking or sober.

Now you say that they're nicer when they're medicated.

Which is it?

My father in law is an alcoholic. He stopped drinking at the age of 53, and he hasn't had a drink since. He is now 81.

He was- before and after- a gentle, kind person of great integrity and control. In fact, it was that personality that probably allowed the family to stay together. He was, as my mother in law says, a sweet drunk. He held the same job for 30 years. But there is no doubt he was an alcoholic. He in no way fits the profile that Elroy insists on repeating.
