It would quite likely make the motherboards cheaper if you wired things internally, especially if you were to create a "platform bundle" of sorts that adds an external (or internalized) I/O bridge. You could also offer different combinations for customers that chose to buy large quantities of GPU core A with CPU core X or B with Y and so on, depending on the application, from ULV mobile to 4x4. It would then only boil down to packaging, while offering product differentiation a la carte, all in the same socket.
