Anyway, the US recognizes that Taiwan is part of China. Has done so since 1978.

We just don't support the Chinese mainland government taking over Taiwan by force.

We acknowledge Taiwan as part of China, while we separately support Taiwan will military hardware, so China can't take it's own province. We tell Taiwan not to stir the pot by talking about independence and we ignore the Chinese when they complain about the US providing military arms to Taiwan, which is their province ... we say, but we provide the stuff to Taiwan anyway. It's a silly game, but effective.
