One of the books I ordered last week was titled The Singing Neanderthals. I am sure it will hypothesize that they sang in the sense that they could make tones and grunts, not that they were vocally or mentally capable of Bach.

If we are going to limit the definition of music to a more traditional sense, then I will cast my vote with the "because we can" party, and say again that I think it is one of the more attractive features of man that he then uses it to praise something he senses is greater, more powerful, more wonderful than he.

Some biologists hypothesize that Neanderthals sang, but did not speak.

Makes "Les Parapluis de Cherbourg" a Neanderthal movie, right? With Catherine Deneuve the lead Neanderthal woman ;)

LOL

I think I've read that a flute has been found made by a Neanderthal. I gather they weren't as oafish as their image. Perhaps as intellectually able as modern humans or close anyway

Music as an accidental side effect. No one has mentioned that yet. Possible.

Course then that would open up the question do we have more math ability than hunter-gatherer apes need. Counting would be useful, but beyond that ...

And beauty ...

Let's not get into that.

Bye to all for now.
