While polyphony became formalized later, I think it probably was around in simpler forms for a long time. There is something called heterophony, which is not quite polyphony, more of a melody with a variation of the melody happening around it rather than harmonics. I can't imagine that we didn't play with the various possibilities before settling into and developing chant and monophony.

I know nothing about the pygmies, but hope that will be discussed in one of these books I've ordered!
