Wrong. Big Oil started ripping us off in summer 2000, the day after Bush-Cheney were first nominated. Ever since they have lied to us, used phony excuses and colluded to jack up prices to their heart's content. The only three times prices have come down were when they were in political trouble; when Jeffords switched parties (a huge shortage suddenly turned into a glut), when the oil CEO's testified in front of congress (right after Katrina when they claimed huge shortages) and several weeks ago when Bushies found themselves in danger of losing congress which would lead to real gouging and price-fixing investigations.

Also, remember Prince Bandar offered GW to bring down prices before the 2004 election if GE wanted OPEC to. That's proof they can and do manipulate prices whenever they damn well feel like it. Monopolies are illegal and they are definitely the biggest one. Even Bill O'Reilly has been ranting about this. It's time to re-regulate big oil, and make them pay for their massive ripoffs.

re: Invent a viable alternative to oil and we'll get off of it.

Electricity?

There is nothing inherently "evil" about oil. In fact gasoline is a pretty wondrous thing. A single gallon of the stuff can propel a multi-thousand pound vehicle 40 miles... amazing concentration of energy.

The problem is that this wondrous stuff is becoming increasingly scarce and expensive, and we use over twice as much as we produce. And the bad guys produce most of it, so we are enriching our enemies. And as it gets more expensive, it saps more and more money from our economy and increased our huge trade imbalance.

Having 4.5% of the world population and using 25% of the worlds oil is a huge opportunity for us.

which is a lot less urgent than the threat of terrorism no matter what Gore says.

And you know this how?

Ten, we've already invented it:
* ethanol flex fuel vehicles
* hybrids
* plug-in hybrids

Combine all 3 and drive adoption aggressively to 75% of the cars on the road within the next 15 years, and we will no longer need to import oil. Problem solved. All it takes is national willpower.
